3A Listening class with Ryan Flemming

This class observation made me realize how important classroom social dynamics are, and what effects it can have on teaching. The students in this class were very chatty and it was both a problem and an advantage. It was a problem in the sense that there were a lot of disturbances, since the students liked to joke around a lot. However, during the listening exercises, the students worked extremely well together and they helped each other after every exercise. Mr. Flemming was preparing the students for a midterm, so I got to see a dictation practice. I decided to take the dictation practice along with the class, and even as a native speaker, it was pretty tough! I was able to write down most of the sentences with only one play, but some longer sentences did require a second listen. It made me feel empathy towards the students because the exercise was harder than I expected.
