KellyMichael - TS#5
This was my second session with my child tuttee, Nayum from South Korea. By far and large this was the most frustrating TS and/or CP i have completed. I normally have no experience with children and wasn't sure if I wanted to be a teacher for kids. Teaching adults just seemed to be so much more about the work, and not about all the roles a teacher for kids plays. My main frustration was that Nayum's father insists on meeting in the library and I think Nayum needs to focus on speaking. While we don't have to be silent in the library, you have to contain your voice. Nayum needs confidence builders that get her talking in English, clearly and confidently. Her normal way of answering questions is be silent until I have to prompt her to answer two or three times before she mumbles the answer (always correct) in a quiet voice. I know Nayum is smart, she surprises me with what she knows often. I just think she either is being timid because I'm a virtual stranger to her or because she doesn't want to feel awkward trying speak a new language. I think she would benefit from a different classroom scenario, where the student can speak loudly to get use to hearing their voice in English.
