Hunter TS#5
Sept. 10 at 12:00, I met with Henrique. He approached me quite flustered and asked me what the meaning of "through" was. I demonstrated "through" by putting my arm through my jacket, and sticking a pencil through a piece of paper. I did several different examples like this and soon the light bulb went off and he quickly pulled out a notebook and wrote down a translation in Portuguese. He then asked me to demonstrate for him the difference between "on" and "above." I did this by taking my hat and placing it "on" the table. I then left the hat up so that it was "above" but no longer "on" the table. After doing so, I explained that "on" means that the two items (in this case my hate and the table) need to be touching. When something is "above" something else, there is space between the two items and they do not touch. I obviously very quickly realized he was having difficulty with prepositions. We spent the next hour going over different prepositions that he was having difficulty with. Many of them he had only just started to grasp during our session but still did not fully understand when our time was up and he needed to go back to class. I told me to meet later in the afternoon for another session and we could better discuss prepositions then.
