On September 1st, I had my first tutoring session observing PJ, my child tutee. Frankie and I were able to observe on of his lessons with Ellen. During this session, Ellen had PJ read a passage about how eyes work. This lesson explained the parts of the eye and Ellen would ask comprehension question to see if PJ understood the material. She included an activity to demonstrate how the pupil works by covering her eyes to show the pupil dilating and then shone a light in her eyes to show the pupil contracting. This activity seemed to captivate PJ's interest and helped him understand the passage better. After this, Ellen had PJ read a passage on optical illusions. After reading and answering PJ's questions, Ellen played a music video by OK Go called "Writings on the Walls" which demonstrated many optical illusions and how they work from different angles. This really helped PJ understand what he had read about optical illusions and kept him interested. From this lesson I saw that videos and activities are great at helping keep PJ interested and reestablished his understanding of the material.
