Hunter TS# 6

September 10, at 2:00, I met for a second time with Henrique.  I had found several wonderful reference sheets of prepositions and printed them off for him.  It was illustrated with several examples of a ball's placement around a box.  This seemed to put everything into perspective as he excitedly poured over the pages.  His next question was for me to explain the prepositions:  around,  into, out of, etc.   I understood now that his difficulty lay mostly with prepositions of motion, similar to his difficulty understanding the preposition: through.  I showed him the diagrams for these prepositions of motion had arrows, demonstrating where a the ball was at the start of the motion in relation to the box and where it ended up at the end of the motion.  I then performed several examples.  I put my book "into" my backpack, repeating the word aloud as I did so. I then pulled it back out saying "out of" as I did so.  He wrote down the translations into Portuguese in his notebook. He asked me "These are opposites?  Antonyms?"  I said yes and praised his connection.   I decided to play a quick little game.  I grabbed a chair and pulled it into the center of the room.  I stood on the chair.  "Henrique, where am I right now?"   "On the chair!"  "Yup!"  Next I crawled beneath the chair and again I asked, "Henrique, where am I now?"   "You are below the chair!"  "Yes!  What's another preposition you can use to tell me where I am at?"   "You are under the chair!"   We continued this exercise for a while using several different objects and placements until we had covered all of the prepositions on the reference sheets and I felt confident he now held a better understanding.
