TS#5 Garret

Today, September 11th, I met with David Hong, my child tutee. I was very excited about meeting and working with David and I think that was very obvious when, half way through the hour he said: "You talk a lot." I couldn't help but to laugh, he was so sincere and serious. I spent most of the session really trying to gauge David's personality. His mother relayed to me that his biggest problem was with reading. It made me remember my days in elementary school and the discontent that I felt at the time when being forced to read things that weren't really interesting. In that sense, I couldn't help but to empathize with David. After speaking with his mom, David and I sat alone and talked. I really wanted to get to know him as a student because I do believe that is how I can best plan out our next sessions. I was picking his brain in order to try and find clues about what he likes. I plan to use these things as tools to increase his intrinsic motivation. The number one issue I see in David is that he is smart, and he very well knows it. I do think this will be a very good opportunity to grow as a teacher and I am exhilarated to take on this challenge of truly inspiring David to want to learn and grow.
