Tutee: Dojun
This was a bittersweet tutoring session. It was my last session with Dojun. He has improved so much over the last few weeks on his speaking, grammar, listening, and reading. As a way of measuring his improvement, I mimicked similar activities to the first tutoring session. I had him describe his weekend and expound on the more specific details similarly to a normal conversation. His pauses were much shorter and his listening skills improved greatly. I would have to say his listening skills improved the most out of anything this semester, though I do not take all the credit because he has other tutors and conversation partners. I rarely have to repeat myself even when asking him complex questions or delving into difficult ideas. He talked about the success of "The Martian" at the South Korean box office and his inability to attend due to the long lines. After our conversation, we did a reading comprehension passage. The reading comprehension passage took much less time than the previous weeks and he answered the questions in the passage with ease, even though I increased the levels from previous weeks. He still struggled with difficult vocabulary terms, though that is always expected. I try to use the words in context to ensure that he learns the words in context and properly in usage. After the reading, we had free conversation time to end our last session. I think this is important as it helps him practice his listening skills by having a normal conversation that is unstructured and realistic. It also provides less pressure. This makes him more free to talk and less focused on proper grammar. Overall, I am happy to have tutored Dojun and happy to see how much he has progressed.
