Matthew TS #13

Date: 10/9/15 5-6
Tutees: David and Matthew Hong
This tutoring session was a great success in comparison to my previous tutoring session with both tutes. We had a reading comprehension activity on "Shark Facts," which had appropriately difficult vocabulary words and moderately difficult comprehension questions. After the end of each paragraph, I asked the students to summarize what happened and what was the main topic of each paragraph. How does it relate to the other paragraphs? They both did well on everything and had difficulty on some of the advanced vocabulary, such as "diversity." After we did the reading comprehension questions, I asked them inference questions. Using the text, they eventually figured out the answer to a more difficult question: "What allows sharks to breathe?" After the reading, we did a speaking exercise in which Matthew and David played a guessing game  to try and guess each others object of choice. They had to use complete sentences and use their speaking skills to determine the objects with the game of 21 questions. I think this is a great exercise as it is fun and develops critical thinking skills.
