Tonight I had tutored P.J. and this session has outdone all previous ones. I believe that my promise of doing a Minecraft related activity at the end of the lesson really motivated him to get his homework done as quickly and accurately as possible. We read through a short story and answered some comprehension questions, what was interesting to note was his way of summarizing and what information he found salient. We also had fun doing another short reading passage that was about Cinderella. We both drew a horse as best we could and its attached carriage; he also drew a muscled stick figure with fire balls for hands seeing as how all the magic that occurs in the story such a person could easily be accounted for. After completing these two readings we finally concluded the work portion of the lesson with his TIME for Kids, and we both agreed that the St. Bernard dog featured was ugly. He also was quite proud that he somehow got half credit for a question on which he guessed, but I was able to elucidate for him why he was correct and so he was able to complete the question to receive full credit. Of course, I was true to my promise and for the last ten minutes we watched a Minecraft video on YouTube that he had selected.
