In
this lesson we moved into conditional phrases. As usual, I began with an
instructional video that covered the entire concept in a succinct manner. The
issue with these videos is that they typically move a bit too fast for non-English
speakers and are difficult for the students to connect with. So after the video
I broke down the concept into a slower and more digestible form on a white
board. In this first lesson we managed to cover just the zero conditional and first
conditional forms. The first conditional form had a myriad of formats and made
it very difficult to teach. It was difficult to explain to Do-jun why there was
difference between the zero conditional and the first conditional. In the long
run, Do-jun’s ability to use each form is more important than him knowing what
each form has been classified as. We did not manage to get through all of the
first conditional today. We will be working on the rest of the first through third
conditionals during the next tutoring session.
