Topic/Skill: Contractions in English and
Korean / speaking and listening
Feedback provided to tutor, Hannah: I’ve
been studying English grammar, so I brought my book. I was surprised by that it
explains the rules for pronunciation. I thought that grammar was for written
English, not for spoken. There is a difference between English grammar books
made in Korea and ones in the U.S. A
Korean grammar book for English intends to explain many thing but its purpose
is just to give knowledge, whereas an American grammar book is likely to give
many chances to use knowledge and give pronunciation rules as well. After that, we studied Korean. I asked her
the question in the book, took notes, and gave her a little advice. We talked about Korean crowded subways which
she felt more comfortable than buses because she would get motion sickness when
she was on the backseats.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutor
you learned: She struggled with using contraction in her Korean study book, so
I showed my English grammar book. She pronounced them and explain the formality
of them. I had learned English by books,
so I’ve had problem with spoken English. I mean, when I hear some sentences or
words, I could not recognize them because I could match written English with
spoken. I told her that at the beginning
it’d better to study written and spoken Korean.
