Justin TS#6

On Thursday, October 1st I tutored Yuma. Once again we focused on reading articles and practicing pronunciation. Our first article we read was about the 1960's in America. We spoke about the war in Vietnam and how that affected the people of America. We spoke a lot about the culture that it created within the United States. Yuma didn't have a lot of background knowledge of this, but he was excited to learn about it. We did run into trouble when identifying the divide it created among st the young people but I think I clarified it for Yuma. Our next activity was a little fun to end the week. One of my favorite cultural websites is a company called "Vice". Since Yuma is from Japan I decided to pick a episode from there. There were many topics including food, sex, and strange cultural customs. We decided to watch an episode about the Japanese Love Industry. It was good for Yuma to get practice listening to English and following an entire episode of a show. I would stop periodically to make sure that he was following along. It was also fun to be able to ask about how true what they were saying was in his eyes. I'm thinking about doing something like this again because I think it's a little bit more informal practice. Something that Yuma could do by himself to really learn the language and learn about topics he likes.
