Today I met with one of my tutoring students, Hammoud. As usual, I went to his apartment and we sat and drank arabic coffee while we talked. I helped him with some application work for the University of South Alabama. Afterwards we talked about marriage and the differences in our cultures' customs. I explained the legal side of marriage and what it takes to get married, and that a wedding doesn't have to happen. All a couple needs to do is a get a marriage license to be married. One thing he told me of Kuwaiti culture is that their divorce rate is about equal to ours, over half. I did not know this, and assumed otherwise.
I always enjoy conversations with Hammoud. He is trying very hard to learn conversational english. He asks questions about context, grammar and vocabulary, which makes my part almost effortless. When you are prompted to speak, I think that a trademark of a good conversationalist.
