Tutee: Matthew Hong
Date/Time: September 23 5:00-6:00 PM
From the last tutoring session, I had to tutor Matthew and David. I thought I would have to do so again this week. This week, I prepared a reading assignment about the seven wonders of the world with some comprehension questions and some vocabulary. We went over the reading assignment paragraph by paragraph. He had a lot of questions about historical content and vocabulary. Since the subject had a lot of historical places, the context made it difficult to discern the meaning of the words. I had to give him the definitions and meanings of these difficult words to make the reading easier. I think I should have done this at the beginning of the lesson, but I was worried he would get too bored. I noticed that his reading comprehension skills had improved dramatically from the first session, which made me really happy. The only questions he tended to struggle on was vocabulary, so I will have preparation for that next week. After this, we played a speaking game called 21 questions. It is a game where one person asks yes or no questions about an object to determine what the object is. I think this is a fun exercise that strengthens critical thinking skills and speaking skills. Overall, he enjoyed it a lot. I made sure to make him ask questions in grammatically correct sentences. After this game, we played another game in which we would describe objects in 3 words and the other person had to guess what the object was. He was a lot better at this game than I was. I think this activity helps use of adjectives and word usage in context. Overall, this is the most fun I think Matthew had in our tutoring sessions and I consider doing more "fun" activities like this in future sessions as long as they are appropriate for the lesson.
