I had my first session with Maria, who hails from Barranquilla, Colombia. This was the first tutoring session where I witnessed a true and genuine desire to learn, as she broke down in tears telling me her story. She was a dentist in Colombia and came with her husband in 2008 so that he may become certified as a doctor practicing in the US. During these past years she raised a second child from birth in addition to her son, and supported her husband by working so that he may be afforded the time to study. Now that he has attained his goal and has a position at Tallahassee Memorial she feels that it is time for her to be proud of herself and work towards become a dentist again here in the US. The session was vibrant and her ability to express herself was quite fluid, though punctuated with some errors. She had brought some work on gerunds and by the end of the session she felt a lot more comfortable with the material. I look forward to our next session.
