Ellen TS #14

Tutee: PJ Chang
Date/Time: Saturday 3 October 2015, 10:30-11:30 am

So this lesson was a bit tricky because I had to plan according to material in a book that I did not have in hand while I planned. PJ holds on to the textbook between lessons so I do not get to have it when I need to think forward to the next lesson. The book is well enough equipped that I can walk into a lesson with PJ and work through the book without very much prep time. The first thing I do is look ahead to the main concepts for the chapter, for this week the concepts were main ideas and key details. I read over the concepts and begin to discuss them with PJ. I try to link the concepts to examples from PJ’s life. I reference a lot of his favorite movies, especially Inside Out or other stories he particularly likes. After using real life examples, I bring PJ back to the text and see if he can translate the concepts to the story provided for the unit.  Next, I go the vocabulary for the story and talk through each term with PJ. Finally, we move ahead to the story and read it from beginning to end. I stop every once and a while to check PJ’s comprehension with key questions and to see if he can still apply the concepts from the unit.
