Tutee: Boram Kang
Date and time: September 4, 2015 12:30-2:30
I am really happy to have a student like Boram. We got along very well on our first session. I met her in Dirac and we sat down in the tutoring section. She seems very enthusiastic about learning and I am glad I have such a dedicated student. To begin the session, I wanted to get to know her and where she came from. She is from South Korea, she has a son who is 9 years old and her husband is doing his PhD in English Literature. I made a list of topics that interest her the most. Some of the subjects she has interest are: feminism, cultural studies, human rights, documentaries and animal rights. We found out that we have many things in common and I told her about a couple of documentaries that she can watch that include the topics she likes. I told her about my studies in sociology and how I am interested in working in the fields of human trafficking and she was very intrigued my the idea. I love her curiosity and she raised a lot of great questions about social issues. She told me that she wanted to practice conversations and learn more about modern slang. I told her the meanings of several abbreviations and slang that are used within our age-group and we made a list of that as well. I told her about TedTalks that we can watch and clips that would help her practice listening and understanding modern-day slang and terminology.
