Tutee: Andy Moon
Date and Time: September 4, 2015 4:40-5:40
Andy is my child tutee and I met him and his father at the public library. He is five years old and is learning how to practice English and read. Honestly, I was nervous about teaching a 5 year-old, but it turned out to be pretty fun. It took him a while to get use to me, but soon he got comfortable and we walked around the library to pick out books. I asked him what subjects he wanted to explore: cars, airplanes, animals, etc. He seemed very keen on picking out books with animals. We read about six books together. At first he was shy about reading, but after a while he helped me out with some basic words. I taught him a new word: Afraid. I remember in class that it is best to repeat the word at least 7 times, so you can grasp the new word, so I had him read it and repeat it each time it came up in the books. I kept asking him what it meant every time, as well. He learned that "afraid" is another word that describes "to be scared". We also read books about shapes and colors. This was his strong point. He knew all of his shapes and how to distinguish them. I will see him again next Friday, so hopefully he remembers what afraid means.
