Keunhwa CO#1

Date/Time: Monday, Aug. 31/ 02:00~02:50

Topic/Skill: Java Heads Coffee shop/ listening

Teacher Presentation: explaining the strategies for listening and letting students apply them

Classroom Management: a big table with 9 seats in the middle of the classroom and a small table with 4 against a wall.

Materials: CIES textbook for group 2, board, computer for an instructor

Student Participation: There were 4 female and 8 male students mostly from East Asia. The teacher asked students a lot of questions but she did not pinpoint any student so they did not need to give an opinion. Male students Answered more often that female ones overall. Students predicted what they would listen to before they watched a clip. They had to use the strategies for pre-listening and fill blanks with their predictions on the textbooks. They concentrated on their listening.

Feedback Provided: The teacher praised students about perfect attendance of the day. When she heard inappropriate responds, she explained what the problems were and asked for right answers. She tried to connect the contents of the textbook with students’ background knowledge. When a student could not know an answer, she whispered it to protect him from being humiliated.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Even though a teacher is passionate, it is not easy that listening class can be student-centered. The teacher asked questions consistently, but students had barely opportunities to express their opinions. This was not a speaking lesson, though.
