My first tutoring session was with my child tutee, Nayun. We met at the Leroy Collins Public Library. Her father had not filled out the needs assessment I emailed, and so I was pretty nervous about what we would be doing. It was hard to address what route to take when there was no established needs discussed before the session. I decided to treat the first session as a hands-on needs assessment. We covered a little bit of everything. I had Nayun write and speak mostly, being five I don't think vocabulary or spelling will be as important. She was a pleasure to work with, and engaged in every topic and activity. We also covered some grammar. She was leaving off the article "a" or "an" when we were talking about her family. After a few examples that were outside the topic we were discussing, I think she began to understand the usage. Next time I don't think the library will suffice as I had to watch how loud we were getting, and I really want Nayun to talk more without me prompting her. I think a setting where you aren't expect to be quiet will work out better. In the future, I plan to continue helping Nayun speak English as our first and foremost goal. She is already attending school with native English speakers so I'm hoping his will help her communicate with the other children.
