Tutee: PJ Chang
Date/Time: Tuesday 1 September 2015, 6:30-7:30 pm
This was an interesting tutoring session. PJ is getting two
new tutors this week and we thought is would be a good idea for them to observe
one of his lessons with me before they had to take on a lesson by themselves. I
became very aware of the way I was speaking to PJ and the way I approached
teaching new concepts. One of the other tutors actually asked my why I didn’t
give him a hint to help him with the question. I prefer to let PJ really swim
with a question before I give him a hint. I think this helps him engage his
brain in his own way before I try to guide him. I saw that in my writing lesson
as well. My lesson involved a final writing exercise and instead of giving an
example first, I waited for the students to complete the activity first. I know
this isn’t traditional but I do think there is a certain benefit to letting
students work through a problem on their own before giving them exact
directions.
