Today was a lesson in understanding what your student is going through outside of class. PJ was a little off today; it was a Friday and he had been hoping to play with a friend but unfortunately his lesson cut into his play time. He did very well in the lesson until the very last activity. We were working on learning to read a thermometer (which is a difficult skill) and I could tell it was stressing him out. I was doing my best to keep him upbeat, we had even taken a brain break earlier that lesson to shake out, but right at the end of the lesson PJ started crying. I was surprised and didn’t know what to do. I let him have his privacy. I wasn’t sure what the appropriate behavior was in that sort of situation. I think I did the best I could considering the circumstances and I know it wasn’t my fault but is there a special protocol for dealing with emotions in class?
