Ellen Boener TS#2

Tutee: PJ Chang
Date/Time: Thursday 20 August 2015, 5:30-6:30 pm

This time I was a little better prepared to meet with PJ. I knew a bit about him and how he talked so I was ready to run the lesson. One thing that I find really challenging about tutoring PJ is finding the balance between listening and teaching. I feel like one of the most damaging things a tutor can do is steam roll over their students. A one-on-one tutoring session is a unique opportunity for the student to discuss their opinions on study materials that they often don’t have in a large classroom. I find it hard sometimes to strike a balance between listening to PJ and pointing out the material. PJ, like many other 9 year olds, sometimes lets his brain wonder from the material by connecting it to his outside life. I think this is a valuable skill so I let him make these connections before drawing him back to the text.
