Tutee: PJ Chang
Date/Time: Tuesday 18 August 2015, 7:00-8:00 pm
I was nervous going into my first tutoring session. My main
worry was not whether or not the student would like me but rather the experience
would be exceedingly awkward. Whether or not a student likes you is not the
point of being a tutor. Yes, it helps if you have a good relationship but that
does not mean that you have to be friends by any stretch of the imagination. I
got lucky, PJ enjoys learning with me. What no one ever tells you about
teaching is that the initial interactions can be very awkward. As a tutor you
are put in a one-on-one interaction with someone you may have never met before
and all you have in common is the text book between you. I find the key is to
stick to the book. I tried to make PJ as comfortable as possible
by telling him a bit about myself but in the long run, the material we study will be how we can relate to each other.
