This morning was my second meeting with Do-jun. The biggest
development today was that he asked me to correct any major grammar mistakes
he made. He seems a bit self conscious about his language abilities, which isn’t
a terrible thing since that makes him more aware of his speech. However,
he doesn’t hold back when trying to tell me something so he seems to be
balancing his nerves well. I explained that even though his English
isn’t perfect I very rarely have any difficulty understanding what he is trying
to say. After that I began to pick up on the exact nature of his grammatical
errors and correct them as we went. He does well with most basic concepts but
he does trip over more advanced distinctions. One major confusion he had was
the difference between “must/to have to” and “should.” It took a little bit to
explain because the distinction isn’t rooted in the concrete. I used a lot of
examples to break the difference down.
