Nahid TS#4

Tutee: Boram Kang
Date and time: September 9, 2015

Today's session was very interesting.  I had a lesson plan ready for Boram on the topics that she was most interested in:  standard English, woman empowerment, sarcasm and modern-day slang.  We met in Strozier and got a private study room.  I connected the laptop to the monitor so we can watch the clips on the big TV screen.  At the beginning of the session, she started off by telling me that after our last tutoring session, she was very interested in learning more about human trafficking and what it was all about.  She told me that over the weekend she did some research on it and was shocked about the statistics and stories that she found.  She told me that she wanted to learn more about this topic.  Luckily, I had a file saved on my iCloud that had presentations about human trafficking and prostitution around the world.  These were power-point presentations I created when I was running the human trafficking organization on campus.  I asked her if she wanted to see a presentation and she insisted.  I showed her a presentation on human trafficking and prostitution in Bangladesh and India.  She learned new words that were on the slides and we looked up some definitions together.  I showed her a clip about a girl that works in a brothel in Bangladesh and Boram had to read the subtitles in English.  After the presentation, we discussed about cultural differences and how brothels are like in Korea.  She told me that she was shocked that there was so much human trafficking and asked me several questions about the subject.  She was very curious about the subject and wanted to know why more students and teachers don't talk about it and why it is not seen in the media.  We had very good discussions about social issues today.  She is very smart and curious.  She learned new words, I hinted to her when I was being sarcastic in the conversations (it is something that she wants to practice) and she learned about global issues.
