Matthew TS #2

Tutee: Mathew Hong
Date/Time: Fri, September 4th 5:00-6:00 PM

I was less nervous about this needs assessment/diagnostic because I completed my first diagnostic with Do-Jun a week earlier. I prepared a reading assignment that was suitable for his grade level. He seemed to have a pretty strong grasp on vocabulary but a weaker grasp on main topics and ideas from the lesson. To gauge this, I provided reading comprehension questions and vocabulary questions based on the text I provided. He was very eager to answer the questions quickly, but I reminded him to slow down in order to think about each question. I think if he slowed down to digest the text, he would comprehend complex ideas more handily. Since he is a native speaker, I saw very little issue with his speaking ability when I asked him to summarize the text to me. I will probably conduct more investigation in future tutoring sessions on this topic.

In hindsight, I should have prefaced the questions by asking him to summarize the article to me instead of asking him after he already answered my questions. Also, I wanted to include a writing diagnostic but time did not permit. In my opinion, Mathew's English seems very comparable to other 4th graders from my first impression. I think more reading exercises would help him the most in next week's session.
