I had no idea what to expect walking into my first class
observation and was pleasantly surprised to see an environment I was not
totally unfamiliar with. I was instantly reminded of my High School AP Spanish
class. The activities were structured in a nearly identical fashion. A brief
introductory discussion lead into a video than a reading comprehension
exercise. I made sure to focus on the teacher’s techniques for correcting
grammar and language on the fly. The key was to keep the conversation going and only pause just to correct major or common mistakes. The teacher
has to be aware of their word choices and explain any colloquialisms that slip in. The discussion focused on topical content (Cigarette use,
legislature, and history) because it helped the students begin to apply their
English to the world outside of academia. I really enjoyed the class and I
can’t wait for my next observation.
