Andrea CO #2

Today I observed a foundations level reading class. I was not sure what to expect of this class since I know that foundations students don't have much English fluency compared to all of the other CIES students I've come in contact with so far. I actually enjoyed sitting in on this class because the Ms. Golen was very animated and was doing her best to keep the class engaged. The class focused mainly on phonic rules. I thought that this would be difficult to teach, especially after seeing the symbol system that the class was using, but it seemed that most of the students got it quickly. While there are inevitably some exceptions to the rules, the techniques seemed like a generally reliable way to teach basic pronunciation. Personally, I think that I would enjoy teaching a class like this one. It's a fun and relaxed teaching approach, but still has structure and the students are learning things that are majorly important if they want to continue their English studies. The students did not seem overly worried about making mistakes despite being total beginners. I think this is probably thanks to Ms. Golen's cheery attitude and the positive atmosphere she helped foster.
