Matthew TS #4

Tutee: Do-Jun Kim
Date: Monday 9/7/15 8-9 AM

On my third tutoring session with Do-Jun, I similarly started the session off with a clip from an American television show. I picked a clip from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, since I thought he would know the main actor, Will Smith. The clip was more complex than the clip from the week before and lacked subtitles, so I thought it would be more difficult. I think I was correct on this assumption. In addition to complexity of the scene, many of the actors had regional accents, which made it difficult to understand. Despite these challenges, Do-Jun did an adequate job in describing the scenario where a man got hustled by Will's uncle in pool, or billiards. The vocabulary in this clip was pretty straight forward but there were some instances of slang that I needed to clarify. In addition, there were some tricky words like billiards that he was aware of before the clip but assumed was a plural noun. I corrected him and used other examples of nouns that end in 's' that are singular, like mathematics and checkers.
After this activity, I used a reading sample, that I also used with my other tutee, about outer space. In contrast to my other tutee, Do-Jun's comprehension of the main ideas and points of the text were exemplary. He had a hard time with figurative language, especially with the word "like" used as an adverb. I had him read the beginning of the sentence and use context to how the phrase was being used. The figurative language in itself may have made the text more difficult than his level of difficulty of lower intermediate, but the content seemed to be appropriate. I think Do-Jun could work on his reading speed more, so I will probably do activities on that in a future session. Next week, I have planned to focus more on writing and grammar since the majority of the focus has been on speaking and listening.
