Matthew TS #3

Tutee: Do-Jun Kim
Date: Friday 9/4/15 9:30-10:30 PM

In the second tutoring session with Do-Jun, I knew what he wanted to focus on from the needs assessment from last week. Since we needed to focus on listening and speaking, we watched the Cheesecake Friends clip from class. Before watching the clip, I prefaced him to take notes on what is occurring so he could tell me about it in English. After watching the clip, I asked him if there were certain words that he wasn't familiar with. He said that he wasn't able to remember certain words since the actors talked so quickly. I went over words that I thought he would have trouble with by defining them and using them in a sentence. I initially thought I did a pretty bad job explaining the terminology but was surprised when he summarized the scenario a few minutes after. He used 3 or 4 of the difficult vocabulary terms in correct context while describing the scenario to me. He generally got the gist of the events that occurred but sometimes phrased actions awkwardly. At the end of his description, I offered alternative ways to phrase what he was intending to say. After we finished with this activity, I wanted to focus more on his speaking related to every day tasks. I asked him to tell me about his day, step by step. I would intervene about more technical aspects of his job so that he would have to describe what he was doing in English. I thought this was important because these are most likely the scenarios in which he would need to use English on the fly. Although he was slower than when given a scenario to describe, he generally was able to describe the scenarios in better detail than the clip based on american television.
