Tutee: Dojun
Date/Time: September 23 8:00-9:00 AM
During this tutoring session, I wanted to go over grammar for a few reasons. Last week, Dojun had a writing exercise where he consistently made subject verb agreement issues. In addition, I had a lesson plan on this exact topic. I wanted to test it out on Dojun to see if there were any issues with my lesson plan. I started off the session by sending him a link to the worksheet and going over an example problem. I expected to spend at least 20 minutes on this activity. Dojun was surprisingly good, not missing a single problem out of the first 7 or 8 problems. From this, I concluded that his issue must be more with producing sentences with proper subject-verb agreement rather than his ability to do so in a worksheet. After this, we tried a speaking exercise since I noticed some problems with his speech rate over the last few weeks. I gave him 8 minutes to think about a person, place, or thing that he was interested in and give me an impromptu presentation on that person. His speech should last about 2 minutes. He chose Brad Pitt. He described him accurately and spoke with mostly proper grammar, though his speech rate was not as fast as I wanted. At this point, the session was coming to a close, so I gave him a homework assignment to work on giving me a similar presentation while focusing on his speech rate and pauses between words. I said this assignment should take ~15 minutes before class and the speech should be no longer than 4 minutes.
